Book Description

"Every Day meets Cloud Atlas in this heart-racing, space- and time-bending, epic new trilogy from New York Times bestselling author Claudia Gray.

Marguerite Caine’s physicist parents are known for their radical scientific achievements. Their most astonishing invention: the Firebird, which allows users to jump into parallel universes, some vastly altered from our own. But when Marguerite’s father is murdered, the killer—her parent’s handsome and enigmatic assistant Paul—escapes into another dimension before the law can touch him.

Marguerite can’t let the man who destroyed her family go free, and she races after Paul through different universes, where their lives entangle in increasingly familiar ways. With each encounter she begins to question Paul’s guilt—and her own heart. Soon she discovers the truth behind her father’s death is more sinister than she ever could have imagined.

A Thousand Pieces of You explores a reality where we witness the countless other lives we might lead in an amazingly intricate multiverse, and ask whether, amid infinite possibilities, one love can endure.

Review

Short and Sweet:

A Thousand Pieces of You is a delightful, compelling, fantastically fun read! It definitely lives up to the excitement that its gorgeous cover has inspired in the YA community. An absolute must-read!

To Elaborate...

While I expected any story penned by Claudia Gray to be wonderful, I didn't expect to love the 'parallel worlds' aspect as much as I did. I have enjoyed other books with this concept, but had mostly tired of it until I picked up A Thousand Pieces of You.

So, what the story gets absolutely right for me is the romance. Not straight away, but before long I was feeling all the swoony feelings. I also REALLY appreciated the loving parents who are invested in Marguerite's life. Marguerite also really loves and respects her parents. And guess what? The story is still absolutely fabulous. No absent, or crappy parent dynamic necessary. I really hope to see more of this positivity in YA regarding parent/teen relationships. The dynamic between Marguerite and her father is really beautiful and important to the story.

The dimension travel was also really fascinating and exciting to follow. The characters actually 'possess' the version of themselves that exists in the multiverses that they travel to, so the original in each world is dormant, but not entirely gone. It's really interesting and a few moral concepts are introduced that are really intriguing. I've never read a story quite like this one and I'm super excited that this will be a trilogy. I absolutely want to spend more time in this world and see what happens next!

There were a few aspects that I felt picky about, for example: fairly early on, I guessed a couple of things about the 'bad guy(s).' I think that if I hadn't the twist would have been a bit more satisfying. Second of all, I was so excited that Marguerite's mother was this brilliant scientist, but then hardly any time is spent on her character development. This is a badass, genius mom-scientist. I wanted to know her like we got to know Marguerite's father. I hope to see much more of her in the next two installments!

I highly recommend this imaginative, swoony, high stakes story! 4 solid hearts!

  2. I really like what you said about the parents-dynamic of the story! It's true that in a lot of YA books the parents are either horrible, absent or dead and sometimes, that bothers me a bit. I mean, loving your parents doesn't make you any less interesting or strong. There should be more books in which the main character has a good relationship with her/his parents!

This book sounds really good! I want to have all the swoony-feels as well :)

  3. I haven't read this one yet, but I'm curious about how the parallel worlds were depicted. I know a lot of reviews that I've read screamed "foul!" with the "love triangle" thing, but I'm glad you enjoyed the romance. :)

  4. Great review Sabrina! I'm glad to hear that the story for once didn't leave parents as either absent or dead and made them important for the main character and the story!

  5. I talked about the parent-child dynamic in my review too I believe. I loved how close-knit her family was. So refreshing in YA. I really enjoyed the parallel worlds and the romance. There were definitely some moral issues that were brought up, and I definitely disagreed with at least one of the mc's decisions. But I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to read more books from Claudia Gray. I think I want to try her Spellcaster series next. You really liked that one right?
