Bookish Talk: Last Minute Favorites

http://iheartyafiction.blogspot.com/

As the year is closing out, I've been discovering a series of really excellent last minute of 2014 reads. Some of these might be reviewed eventually, but I really just wanted to share them here quickly. 2014 has been such a good year for me as far as discovering new favorites go, so there's no way I'm going to try to name all my favorites. The ones below are just some awesome reads I've picked up in the last two or so weeks (during my winter break) that have snuck up on me as the year closes.

1.) Storm Siren by Mary Weber- Go buy this book. Seriously, just go. Prior to reading this, I was getting so lost in books that just had 'meh' plots (but usually really awesome characters) that I forgot how freaking amazing it is when a book's story line just sweeps you away, unpredictably and wonderfully (in addition to also having really awesome characters). Plus, look at that cover. Tell me that cover does not make you want to go grab this. :)

 Storm Siren (Storm Siren, #1)

2.) The Siege Winter by Ariana Franklin and Samantha Norman- I have a strong love for adult historical fiction, and I get so sad when I go so long without reading it. I finally got a chance to step back into this genre with this Feb. 2015 release, and I'm so glad I did! Beautiful, beautiful writing, and there are small chapters of a separate conversation between an abbot and a scribe (writing the story down) that explains a lot of the over-my-head political tides and such.

 The Siege Winter

3.) All Fall Down by Ally Carter- Coming out in January, this is another must-buy. It's full of action, incredible emotional development, and just plain awesome mystery/suspense. Love it.

All Fall Down (Embassy Row, #1)

4.) In Deep by Terra Elan McVoy- Talk about discussing a mental illness I wasn't familiar with before! This one will get you hardcore thinking/wanting to discuss, and I just couldn't read this fast enough.

 In Deep

5.) Dream a Little Dream by Kerstin Grier- Yeah, another 2015 one that I read this past week. It's a little spooky, a little different, and a whole lot of excellent.

Dream a Little Dream, Chapters 1-5

6.) The Walled City by Ryan Graudin- I loveddd All That Glows so much, and I was really interested to see this author doing something darker. She nails this one right on the head, and I'm still wrapping my head around the fact that there was an actual Walled City that inspired this.

  1. I've had my eye on Storm Siren for a while, but I haven't really read too many reviews about it. I'm glad you featured it today. It gives me some motivation to pick up a copy. The rest sound wonderful as well.

    Happy New Year!

  2. I'm really excited about All Fall Down! I'm definitely going to have to pre-order it! I've been curious about Dream a Little Dream, I thought about requesting it, but eventually decided against it. I'll probably go back and request it now though :)

  5. Not really. I got caught up in business and scrambling to stay on top of review commitments. Look at what you found though. That Ally Carter sounds good.

  6. I saw a lot of people posting book hauls or pictures with Storm Siren in them, but I was like you on not reading/seeing a lot of actual reviews on it. So glad I read it though! Happy New Year to you as well!

  7. All Fall Down was just soooo good. I think I've read one or two of Ally Carter's other books years ago, but this one just blew me away. I definitely recommend going back and requesting DaLD. :) Hope you enjoy them!

  8. I understand the review commitments. Especially this time of year, everything seems so busy. I was really happy to find some quiet time with these. :)

  10. I have got through the same so-so plots and great characters's books for son long, I'm glad there are some out there that keep the exciting arguments, I do need some of them in my life. I can't wait for All Fall Down. I've been yearning for another story by Ally Carter since the end of Gallagher Girls. I can't wait!!!

  11. Oooh I've been on the fence about Storm Siren, but I'm definitely going to have to pick it up now after your brief thoughts on it. You're so right about the cover. Reason enough to buy the book.

Glad to hear that you loved The Walled City. It's sitting in a pile on my floor at home and I haven't been super motivated to read it, but now I think I'll move it up on my list!

Oh and Sabrina, I see that you're reading Winterspell... *stalks you* I want to know everything! That was one of my favorite books I read all year!!

  12. Yay!! I hope you enjoy them both!! Storm Siren's cover is one of my favorites. I've seen so many same-stock-image type covers lately, and SS makes me so happy with its creativity and originality. Plus, it just suits the book super well. :)
