Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and Bookish.
*Please note: These are books that were hard for me to get through not because they sucked, but because either 1) they brought out such an emotional response of some sort that it was hard to keep going at times, or 2) I was really busy and couldn't sit down and focus on it for a good length of time.
1.) Dare You To by Katie McGarry- I honestly still haven't made it completely through this one. I love Katie McGarry's books, and I started this one on the tail end of a rough break up, and it was so intense and emotional of a read anyway that I had to put it down. I'm hopefully going to start it again soon (I just haven't since then because of time), and finally finish it!

2.) Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler- I really identified with the main character in this one, and as bad things started happening to her, I got so ridiculously teary. I did make it through and loved it, but there were several times I had to step away from it for a while.

3.) Rites of Passage by Joy N. Hensley- It is so exhausting when a book keeps bringing out serious anger in you (because of what the MC is going through). I got to a point where I was reading it, and if anyone tried to talk to me, I would snap at them because I was feeling so much anger.
4.) Grim edited by Christine Johnson- Whenever I read short stories, I always read another book at the same time (or more). I loved the short stories in this, but I also loved the books I was reading separately, and it just felt like it took me forever to finally finish this.
5.) Eragon by Christopher Paloni- My cousin let me borrow this when I was in middle school, and for some reason, I kept putting off reading it. Even when I eventually picked up (and loved it!), it took me so long to get through it.
6.) Wild by Alex Mallory- I love anything Tarzan, so I was really excited to start this. I think the length intimidated me a bit though, so I tried to read chunks here and there instead of just reading normally. By the time all the chunks added it up, it felt like I had spent several weeks on it (though it was probably a week, maybe a week and a half).
Nice variety. Only one I know is Grim! I actually liked that one a lot! I'm not bothered with short stories so much! Usually end up wanting more and sometimes find a new author to add to my only growing TBR pile!
ReplyDeleteHere's my Tuesday Post
Have a GREAT day!
Old Follower :)
The anger! That's what my list us about. Some books make me so cranky because the MC just can't make a sensible decision to save their life. I get characters making mistakes, but then with some books it's like, come on, give 'em a break.
ReplyDeleteI have a copy of Wild that I've been trying to get through since I got it. It does look daunting!
ReplyDeleteIt took me so long to read Wild, too! I didn't really end up liking it but I thought that the concept was awesome.
ReplyDeleteLOL! I would really have to think hard about a list like this. I'm more likely to put off the whole book than start it and drag my feet.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about Wild and I like Tarzan stories too so I'll have to check it out.
OMG, I think Rites of Passage brought out rage in every reader. I had to stop the audiobook a few times because I was so pissed. But I loved it. I love Dare You To :)
ReplyDeleteI like short stories, but unless I read them all at once, I just feel like I'm working on finishing the collection for a long time. They are great for when you want to read something but don't have a lot of time on hand though. :)
ReplyDeleteOooo, nice focus for your list! I can't count the number of times MCs make me want to sit down with them and have a nice talk about decision making and rationalizing examining all options.
ReplyDeleteI can definitely see how it isn't for everyone. I wasn't satisfied with the series ending as much, but I'm all about dragon stories (and elves, and dwares, etc. etc.) :)
ReplyDeleteExactly! I reads fairly quickly, but when a book is that long, it just feels like forever to read it. That's kind both the pro and con for ebooks for me. With prints, I love seeing physically how much of a chunk of book I read, but it's a lot easier not to get discouraged with length in ebooks since you just get a percentage (for me, anyway).
ReplyDeleteYes! I was like, "Tarzan retelling, WHAAAA?" *grabby hands*
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with the parallel. On one hand, it's great to be able to read a character you can see yourself in, but that can be its downfall as well (emotionally anyway, not necessarily in merits to the book).
ReplyDeleteI hope you do!! I'm SO fascinated with Tarzan things (especially Jane's character), and I liked what Wild did with that (though it's very contemporary).
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine going through that as an audio book! I think that would have made it worse anger wise for me.
ReplyDeleteI was actually pretty satisfied with the ending (well, in a bittersweet way), but I know several people who wanted something more to happen. Either way, I would happily read anything else the author writes. :)
ReplyDeleteI hope you do! I definitely wouldn't say it was the most emotional out of all on the list, but it was still a doozy.
ReplyDeleteIt was the same with "Eragon" with me, but I - instead of you - didn't like it... :(
