Book Description
"This twisty, breathless cat-and-mouse thrill ride, told in the second person, follows a girl with amnesia in present-day Los Angeles who is being pursued by mysterious and terrifying assailants.
A girl wakes up on the train tracks, a subway car barreling down on her. With only minutes to react, she hunches down and the train speeds over her. She doesn’t remember her name, where she is, or how she got there. She has a tattoo on the inside of her right wrist of a blackbird inside a box, letters and numbers printed just below: FNV02198. There is only one thing she knows for sure: people are trying to kill her.
On the run for her life, she tries to untangle who she is and what happened to the girl she used to be. Nothing and no one are what they appear to be. But the truth is more disturbing than she ever imagined.
The Maze Runner series meets Code Name Verity, Blackbird is relentless and action-packed, filled with surprising twists."
Review
Short and Sweet:
This book is crazy! It was like a 'choose-your-own-adventure' story full of twists and turns you get to be a part of. A thrilling book that is incredibly hard to put down!
To Elaborate...
Blackbird had me at page 1. I was immediately swept up. My heart literally pounded as the nameless main character struggled to figure out who she was, what to do and most of all: why people were trying to kill her. Intriguingly, the entire story is told in second-person. So this story is happening to you, the reader. I can see how this could have gone horribly wrong, but it didn't. I loved every moment.
The MC is just the right combination of qualities that the reader can relate to and then 'slip into her shoes.' I identified with her reactions to the unending onslaught of terrifying circumstances and information. I could imagine the disorienting feeling of knowing nothing apart from the fact that you are in mortal danger and that there is no one to help you. And I can only hope that I would be half as resourceful and brave as Blackbird's mystery girl in such a dramatic scenario.
Eventually, memories do begin returning to her and we piece together what is happening. But the why's and the how's continue to elude even as the danger is closing in during those final pages. The story comes to a dramatic close with the introducing of a character that promises to increase the drama as well as (hopefully) illuminate answers to remaining questions in book 2. I am SO looking forward to what happens next! A fantastically different story that left me craving more!

This sounds so exciting! I haven't read anything like it in 2nd person but it sounds just cool enough to work.
ReplyDeleteI REALLY liked it! I was all wide-eyed and heart-pounding into it!
ReplyDeleteYay, I'm glad you enjoyed Blackbird! I've had my eye it for hopefully later - so I'm happy to hear the story comes to a good, dramatic close with of course with a new character to intrigue. Everytime I read the summary about the tattoo of a blackbird and the letters
ReplyDeleteand numbers, I can't help but want to pick this one up. Great review, Sabrina :)
Quite an adventure! I love when a book gets my heart rate going. Reading and cardio: always a good thing! Lol.

ReplyDeleteI love books where the MC has lost her memory so I was definitely looking forward to this one, but your review makes me even more excited!! ~Pam
ReplyDeleteI dont think i downloaded this one but it does sound pretty good. It may not be my usual read but im glad to see you liked it!
ReplyDeleteOoh, yay! I generally liked Anna Carey's Eve books, but didn't love them, so I'm kind of worried about how I'll like this one. I just hope I like the second person. You definitely get me more excited--I love being swept up in the story! :D Great review!
ReplyDeleteI downloaded this blindly without reading the description, but now I'm really excited about it! I feel like I read so much slow, literary stuff - this will be a good change of pace!
ReplyDeleteI think that is part of why I loved it as much as I did. It's completely different than anything I've read lately.
ReplyDeleteI didn't read her other series (although it's on my shelf). I think you can definitely judge whether or not you'd like it with a sample. I'd say that if you aren't liking it 50 pages in, you're not going to.
ReplyDeleteYay! I hope you love it, Sara!
ReplyDeleteI am a fast reader who can miss things so I went back and re-read and I don't think that's who he is-- not unless they have a Flowers in the Attic kind of thing going...
ReplyDeleteI am so very excited and intrigued about this one! The whole second person narration in itself is different enough to want me to read it, and then the thriller and mystery and danger feel sound like a fast and heart pounding read!
ReplyDeleteGreat review, Sabrina!
I can honestly say that I haven't read anything like it for awhile. Loved it. :)
ReplyDeleteHaha! Exactly!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sandy! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
ReplyDeleteYay! I'm so glad! Thanks, Pam!
ReplyDeleteI totally didn't see it as a love triangle... hmmm..... I thought it was her *SPOILER< SPOILER* brother? Now I just want the next book even more.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Pili! I would definitely recommend to those looking for something 'different' from what they've been reading lately. It's really a great book!
